Online Skype Counselling – Everything You Need To Know

What is Skype?

“Skype” is a piece of free computer software that permits people to chat in real-time, face-to-face through their computer screens. Easy to use and quick to download, Skype ensures that you can be seen and heard from anywhere in the world providing you have access to a web camera and microphone.
Online therapy or “Skype counselling” is the exact same process as traditional counselling with the only difference being the interaction between you and your therapist taking place via video link rather than in person.

What Are The Advantages of Skype Counselling?

As a patient, you’re able to choose any counsellor you want as you won’t be limited by travel distance. Without the restrictions of travel, you’re able to pick any counsellor whom you feel you have the best rapport with or who gets you the most.
Without the restrictions of travel, you can have your counselling sessions in any location, provided you have the necessary equipment and a good internet connection. This can help you feel more comfortable and better able to engage.
You can still have counselling sessions if you happen to be away from home – whether that be for work or on holiday.
Not having to travel  saves you time and money.
A sometimes-overlooked advantage in having a therapist who doesn’t live locally is that you won’t accidentally bump into them when you’re out and about which may be off putting for some people

Things To Consider Before Starting Skype Counselling

Like with traditional counselling, it’s important to check that your counsellor is experienced and accredited before entering into any form of contract with them. You can do this by asking them which professional body they’re affiliated with.
For Skype counselling to work, you’ll need a high-speed internet connection plus a web cam and microphone on your computer. Having a pixelated screen can make online counselling a struggle.
You’ll need to ensure that you are online at the appointed time in a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted or overheard.
Some people can find online counselling disconcerting. Use the first couple of sessions to gauge how you feel about the process and decide whether its right for you.

How Do You Find A Skype Counsellor?

Simply typing Skype counselling into a search engine should get you a list of individual counsellors as well as organisations. Alternatively, you can find information in your doctors’ surgery, through friends and family, ask on Facebook groups or forums, or even in your local newspaper.
