Benefits of online therapy

Every once in a while, we find ourselves in the position to need professional aid to discuss our issues. Be it because we lost someone we care about, or simply because we feel life starts to become a little overwhelming, seeking therapy is a normal step for someone who needs a little help processing their feelings.

However, because of their busy schedules or lack of professionals in their area, many people end up postponing the beginning of therapy. Fortunately, technology has opened up a new range of opportunities for mental health treatment, including online therapy.

Broadly speaking, online counselling is not much different from traditional therapy, the main distinction being that, instead of going to a brick-and-mortar therapist’s office, the session happens via an online chat platform.

Online therapy is best suited for those who, for one reason or another, find it inconvenient to go to a traditional office. It provides a range of benefits, which we will be discussing below.

Therapy becomes more accessible

By opting for online therapy, people living in remote areas or those with busy schedules don’t need to go out of their way to find the means to attend counselling. To attend online therapy, all a patient needs is a stable internet connection and a communication app, such as Skype, which they can install on any device, be it a computer or a phone.

Online counselling is more affordable

Because you get to attend therapy sessions from the comfort of your own home or office, you cut down on transportation costs. Online therapists also have to cover fewer expenses, as they do not need to rent an office for their sessions, which often make their prices much more affordable than traditional therapy. What’s more, many health insurance companies now cover online therapy as well, so you may want to contact your insurance company and check the policy.

Scheduling a session is much more convenient

With online therapy, you get to attend sessions from wherever you may be. You can be at home, in the office, or even on a trip and you can still schedule an appointment with your therapist. This allows for a more flexible schedule, making therapy much more convenient for your busy calendar.

You can enjoy a certain comfort level

Many patients say they feel a certain pressure when coming to a therapist’s office, especially if it is their first visit, and that’s completely normal. You are in a new place, meeting a new person, which can really shake your comfort level. With online counselling, you get to attend therapy from a familiar place, which helps keep your comfort levels stable.

It helps patients be more open

When people are comfortable and feel safe, it’s much easier for them to open up, especially if they are a naturally shy person. Face-to-face meetings, especially with a counsellor, can make people feel uneasy. In contrast, the virtual barrier brings up a sense of calm, making it easier for patients to openly discuss their issues.

Feeling sad for no reason? How to tell if it’s normal or a sign of depression

Modern-day Western culture loves positive thinking. We’re encouraged to smile, look on the bright side, “think happy thoughts”, to the point where sadness has been marginalised as an almost problematic emotion or a red flag for mental health. However, sadness is a normal, valid, healthy emotion that you should not be afraid to express. It […]
