Mental health is a concern for everyone including young adults; especially, the student population of the county. You might be surprised to know that stress levels are running exceptionally high among our younger generation.

Stats suggest that one UK student dies by suicide every four days. There has been a staggering 450% increase in the number of students officially declaring a mental health condition while over 70% of students feel quite concerned about their mental health.

Why we should be concerned?

The poor mental health of students across the country is a silent killer that can have severe repercussions in the future, including –

  • Poor mental has been associated with poor academic performance. It greatly reduces the ability of a student to function productively.
  • It also causes lifelong problems for these students which shows effect in all facets of their life, including but not limited to relationships, employment, and more.
  • It hampers the person’s ability to interact with others, empathise with others, and take part in social activities, in general.

These are just a few of the many problems that are caused due to mental health issues in the younger generation. It ultimately creates a generation of people that are not able to operate at their best and unable to realise their own potential.

It is important to take the mental health of students seriously and do something about it.

5 Tips for Better Mental Health in Students

Here are a few ways in which students can improve their mental health –

  1. Keep your daily schedule fun and interesting – Students get stuck in a rut of simply studying day in and day out. It leads to deterioration in their mental health. One of the best ways to combat it is to keep the schedule fun and interesting. Add different kinds of activities in your daily life like reading, taking your dog for a walk, or even, simply sitting down in the park for a while. This will help you relax.
  2. Talk to family and friends – Take some time out to talk to a family member or a friend each day. It will help you vent out your feelings and instantly make you feel light and happy. It is important to have at least two people in your circle that you can trust with anything and everything.
  3. Eat good, clean food – What you eat also greatly affects your mental health. Try to eat fresh, good food whenever you can; and, you will notice a great improvement in your mental and physical health.
  4. Try to get some exercise – Doing some sort of physical exercise, even for just 30 minutes a day, can greatly improve your mental health. It will help to reduce the stress levels in your body and in turn, has a lot of physical benefits as well.
  5. Talk to a therapist – If you have been facing mental health issues for quite some time and you have unsuccessfully tried to fix them in different ways then now is the time to consult with a professional therapist. It is time to take your mental health seriously.
