Am I a compulsive liar?

Honesty is important in every aspect of life.

Whether you want to build strong, meaningful relationships in life or you want to quickly climb the professional ladder – honesty and integrity are something that you will surely need on the way. People, even businesses, want to associate with people that have a high level of integrity because such people can be trusted without any doubt.

Some people develop a habit of lying to such an extent that it becomes second nature for them to lie at any given opportunity. While it might seem like an easy way out at a given time, it is definitely a recipe for disaster in the long run.

Life becomes exceptionally difficult for compulsive liars.

What is compulsive lying?

Compulsive lying is a pathological condition in which a person tends to lie about anything and everything. They lie about matters that are important and, even, about trivial issues that hold no importance.

Lying becomes a part of their nature and personality. It is the only way they know to operate daily. It causes harm to themselves and also to those around them.

Signs that you may be a compulsive liar

If you doubt that you may be becoming a compulsive liar, check for these signs –

  • You find yourself lying now and then.
  • You more often than not lie even when there is no need for it, in general.
  • You lie to create a better impression of yourself in front of others.
  • Your lies are often quite believable and appear to be true at most times.
  • Your habit of lying causes problems in your relationships and, even, at work.

These are just a few signs of a compulsive liar. There can be other signs and symptoms as well since they vary from person to person.

Here’s what you can do about it

If you think you are a compulsive liar, here are a few things that you can do about it –

  • Understand your triggers. Try to identify the people or things that trigger you to lie. It will help you create a strategy to avoid them or deal with them as needed.
  • Catch yourself in the act. Whenever you are about to lie, there is a small window of realisation. Try to catch yourself just before you are about to lie and stop while you can. Consider the worst that can happen if you don’t lie and try to make a change.
  • Talk to a therapist. A professional therapist can help you identify the stressors that are causing this problem and, even, show you the way to get out of this habit of compulsive lying. Don’t shy away from addressing your problem with a professional.
