Healing through understanding myself

I have been suffering from depression and anxiety for a long time now. However, I am happy to say that I am further along the path of recovery than ever before. I feel as if I am closer to healing than I have ever been. And, closer to being free, happy, and joyful than ever before.

A lot of things helped me get here including intensive therapy sessions, self-care, positive affirmations, a supportive family, and more. However, there is one thing that has helped me more than anything else (and, I think it is the most underrated thing as well) – the effort I put into understanding myself.

The Key to Healing – Understanding Yourself

Yes, I truly believe that understanding yourself is the key to healing. I had tried a lot of different things to recover from my mental health issues, however, nothing worked. I would, again and again, fall back into the same dark space.

It took me a while to understand that the problem was my self. I was yet to understand what it was that I wanted, what were my problems, and what I could do to heal myself.

And, I found the answers to all these questions by putting effort to understand my self better. We spend years trying to figure out the people around us, however, we forget to invest time and effort into understanding our self first.

3 Ways to Understand Yourself Better

If you would like to understand yourself better, here are a few helpful ways to get started –

Spend some time with yourself

In our busy lives, we try to find time for everything. For a last-minute meeting, a quick breakfast, a short (but, intense) session at the gym, and what-not but we forget to wind down and find some time to spend with our self. Try to spend some time with yourself. Give yourself a little quiet time to think over things.

Try to meditate (even if just for a few minutes)

Meditation is one of the best ways to learn more about yourself. It helps to quiet down all the noise around you and focus your attention on that which matters the most – you. It will help you look inside yourself and figure out a lot of things.

Write down your thoughts

If you are confused about your thoughts, feelings, and/or emotions, try to write them down. When you put pen to paper, suddenly a lot of things make more sense than ever before. You can also try journalling to help you make sense of your thoughts.
