Therapy for Stress

Many of us are affected by stress, but what exactly is it? Basically, it is the internal reaction of our body to things going on externally, resulting in often unpleasant feelings, thoughts and physical symptoms. A professional counsellor or therapist can often help when we find ourselves struggling to cope with large amounts of stress.

Whether your stress has been triggered by redundancy, divorce, giving birth, death of a loved one or one of the other myriad of things that we find ourselves faced with every day, a stress counsellor can help you deal with any resultant physical or mental health issues.

How do you know if you are stressed?

Do you find yourself unable to concentrate or sleep? You may be under or over-eating or over-indulging in alcohol. Your sex drive may wane or you may feel continually anxious or depressed. Any of these symptoms and a whole lot more can mean that you are being affected by stress in a negative way. When outside factors are brought back under your control, the stress may reduce. However, this is not always the case and leaving stress untreated long-term may result in more serious health issues. This is where a therapist or mental health counsellor can help you.

How can a counsellor help?

Your stress counsellor will do their best to find out what is causing your stress and will take a detailed history.

They will then examine the symptoms that you are experiencing and begin to work with you to tackle the issues that are causing them. Cognitive behavioural therapy is often used as a technique that can change negative thinking that has been brought about by stress.

If your counsellor feels that your stress or anxiety is due to external factors such as a traumatic event or loss, he will use therapy to work on these problems and their affects upon you. For example, if your stress is due to a divorce or relationship issue, family or couples therapy could bring with it a solution.

By tackling the problem head on, in the right way, your stress levels can be reduced dramatically.

If you would like us to put you in touch with a professional stress counsellor, simply fill in the form below. We will then locate a suitable therapist that can help.
