When Trauma Holds You Back

Trauma can feel like an invisible weight, disrupting relationships, work, and overall wellbeing.

Living with unresolved trauma can feel like carrying an invisible weight. You might experience intrusive memories, nightmares, or feel constantly on edge. Perhaps you've noticed yourself avoiding certain places, people or conversations that remind you of painful experiences. These reactions are your mind and body's natural response to trauma—not signs of weakness or failure.

Whether you're dealing with a single traumatic incident or complex trauma developed over time, the impact can affect your relationships, work, and overall wellbeing. Many people struggle silently for years before seeking help, unsure if their experiences "qualify" as trauma or if therapy can truly make a difference.

Trauma responses are your brain's way of protecting you, but they can persist long after the danger has passed. Research shows that without appropriate trauma counselling, trauma frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and other difficulties that impact daily functioning.

Healing is Possible with the Right Support

Trauma counselling provides a safe, confidential space to process difficult experiences at your own pace. Working with a specialist trauma therapist helps you understand how past events affect your present life, while developing practical tools to manage symptoms and reclaim your sense of safety and control.

Evidence-based approaches like Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) have been shown to effectively reduce PTSD symptoms and improve quality of life. Online trauma therapy offers the same benefits as in-person sessions, with the added comfort of accessing support from your own home—particularly valuable when feeling vulnerable.

UK clinical studies confirm that online trauma-focused therapies achieve equivalent outcomes to in-person delivery for PTSD symptom reduction, with sustained benefits at 12-month follow-up, making professional PTSD therapy more accessible than ever before.

Our therapists offer understanding and effective support to help you process traumatic experiences and build resilience.

Common Concerns About Trauma Therapy

Many people share the same worries before starting trauma therapy—rest assured that sessions are paced and tailored to your comfort and needs.
"Will I have to talk about every detail of my trauma?"

Effective trauma therapy moves at your pace. While processing traumatic memories is part of healing, your therapist will ensure you have coping skills in place before addressing difficult experiences.

"I've tried therapy before and it didn't help."

General counselling differs from specialised trauma counselling. Our therapists are specifically trained in evidence-based trauma approaches that address the neurobiological impacts of traumatic experiences.

"Is online therapy really effective for something as serious as trauma?"

Research shows that online trauma therapy can be just as effective as face-to-face sessions. Many clients actually find it easier to open up from the comfort and safety of their own home.

"How do I know if I have PTSD or if I'm just struggling emotionally?"

Only a qualified professional can diagnose PTSD, but common signs include flashbacks, nightmares, avoiding reminders of the trauma, feeling on edge, and changes in mood and thinking. Our trauma therapists can help assess your symptoms.

Many people worry that discussing trauma will make them feel worse, but evidence supports that gradual, guided processing under therapeutic guidance is essential for recovery, helping to integrate difficult experiences rather than avoiding it.

My Style & How I Work

My journey into therapy started as a Criminal Lawyer in Italy, where I worked daily with people facing intense psychological stress, sparking my passion to support mental health. My core belief is that people can transform even the toughest situations—like being in prison or overcoming impossible obstacles—when they embrace the right mental attitude. The most rewarding part of my work is helping clients become their true selves. Every client takes me on a journey of learning about life, love, and compassion. I have a very practical approach, my expertise is full of helpful tools but at the same time I also work with dreams and the unconscious communication of the psyche.

My Story & What Drives Me

My style is supportive and helpful. In the right situation, I share a witty sense of humour with my clients. I find this to be a bonding experience that put things in perspective. I believe I am a robust therapist, I have listened to many traumatic stories with compassion and the ability to still think and process the experience with the client. I believe in boundaries and compassionate listening. I am a problem solver and I can interpret dreams that very often offer a surprising solutions or insight.

Types of Therapy I Offer

I offer therapy to individuals and young adults from 15 years of age to the older population. I am trained in CBT. This approach allows me to offer the client practical tools and focus on the here and now. I am trained in EMDR – this is a specific approach approved by NICE guidelines for trauma and complex trauma. I am trained in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. This is a deeper approach exploring how the past is linked to the present and how sometimes we make unconscious choices. My aim is to bring the into focus unhelpful hidden dynamics.

My Expertise & Focus Areas

My strongest area of expertise is work related to borderline personality disorder, emotional dysregulation and other personality disorders thanks to the MBT programme’s extensive training at The Maudsley. Working with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, stress and insomnia has been the core of my practice in the NHS during the many years I worked for IAPT and various GP surgeries. I developed a particular interest in health anxiety and chronic pain when I was working as part of the Health Department at St. Thomas. My passion is psychodynamic psychotherapy, working with dreams, and the deeper meaning of our psyche. Recently, I completed work as a psychologist for a large consultancy company. My work informed their EAP programme, as it explored and outlined key work-related issues and employee coaching opportunities. Thanks to my extensive training and clinical expertise I can confidently work with abuse, anger, divorce, low self esteem and stress.

My Therapeutic Approach & Methods

The core of being a Counselling Psychologist is to be trained in different therapeutic modalities. No approach should be superior to another, instead, the idea is to use the appropriate approach with the right presentation. Thanks to my extensive training and clinical expertise I believe I can offer a variety of methodologies. I use CBT to help clients solving practical everyday challenges. I focus on EMDR for trauma. I use MBT for personality disorders, emotional dysregulation, stress, anxiety, anger, emotional abusive relationships. I use psychodynamic psychotherapy for deeper issue, adverse childhood events and low self esteem problems.
I warmly invite you to take the next step on your journey toward healing—reach out today to schedule a session, and let’s explore how I can support you in becoming your truest self.

Hi, I’m Ylenia, a Relationship Therapist dedicated to supporting individuals and couples in navigating life’s challenges, improving communication and building stronger, healthier relationships.

I help individuals and couples reconnect, reflect and heal – both with themselves and within their relationships.

Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply seeking more clarity and connection, therapy with me offers a compassionate space to explore what is really going on beneath the surface. My approach is rooted in empathy, curiosity and collaboration.

Together, we will untangle the patterns that may be keeping you from feeling understood, valued and emotionally safe. You don’t need to have all the answers – just a willingness to begin.

Wherever you are on your journey, I’ll be alongside you as we explore things together.

My Style & How I Work

Empathy, trust and confidentiality are at the heart of my work. Therapy with me is a judgment-free space, where you can explore your thoughts, emotions and relationship patterns with the guidance of a professional.

Together, we’ll explore what’s holding you back and find new ways to understand and care for yourself. In the therapy room, I create a balanced and non-judgmental space where you will feel heard.

Fluent in both English and Italian, I strive to make therapy inclusive, accessible and culturally sensitive. I also stay up to date with the latest therapeutic practices through CPD trainings and BACP conferences, ensuring I provide the most effective support possible.

My Story & What Drives Me

My journey into therapy began with a deep interest in human relationships – why we connect, how we disconnect and what helps us repair.

Originally from Lazio, Italy, I moved to the UK over 10 years ago to fully pursue this calling. I began my path with a degree in Psychosocial Studies & Psychodynamic Counselling and volunteered for years with Samaritans, where I offered emotional support to individuals in distress. This experience shaped my understanding of how powerful being truly heard can be.

What drives me most is, witnessing those moments of reconnection: when a client begins to see themselves with more compassion, or when a couple finds their way back to emotional closeness. Those shifts are powerful and deeply human.

Types of Therapy I Offer

I offer individual and couples therapy for adults.

Whether you’re seeking support as an individual or a couple, I offer a warm and non-judgmental space where we can explore what you are going through and work towards meaningful, lasting change – at your pace.

My Expertise & Focus Areas

I support people dealing with many different issues including:

  • Anxiety
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Depression
  • Life changes

I help couples:

  • Improve communication
  • Rebuild connection
  • Navigate challenges such as conflict, intimacy issues, parenthood, infidelity

My Therapeutic Approach & Methods

My work is guided by an integrative approach, which means I combine different therapeutic models to best support each individual or couple I work with. I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” method – each person is unique, so I adapt my approach based on your needs, goals and the issues you’re facing.

At the heart of my work is the belief that self-awareness and emotional connection are key to creating lasting change. I draw from:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: to explore how past experiences might be influencing your present
  • Systemic Therapy: to understand how relationships and patterns affect your current situation
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): to help individuals and couples better understand their emotional needs and rebuild safe, secure connections

I believe everyone deserves a space where they feel truly heard and supported. I offer a warm and empathetic environment where clients can openly explore their emotions and experiences, allowing us to work together toward meaningful goals.

My background is in Social Psychology, and I went on to complete further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I have over eight years of experience working with clients in both NHS and private practice settings. My therapeutic approach is relaxed and informal. Together we can help make changes that will hopefully have a long lasting impact long after therapy is completed.

My Approach

I use a blend of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and person-centred therapy. CBT is a practical, solution-focused approach that helps you understand how your thoughts affect your feelings and behaviours. In our sessions, we might use tools like thought records or journaling to help identify patterns and move towards more helpful ways of thinking and coping.

Alongside CBT, my person-centred approach ensures sessions are guided by you. I offer a non-judgemental, compassionate space where you feel safe to talk openly and be yourself. Building a trusting relationship is key to our work together.

What I Can Help With

I support clients with a range of issues, including:

Anxiety and low mood

Low self-esteem and confidence

Relationship challenges

Trauma

OCD

And more

If you feel I could be the right fit, I’d be honoured to work with you. Together, we can create a space where you feel safe, understood, and supported—where real, lasting change can begin.

Understanding Trauma and PTSD: Recognising the Signs

Recognising the emotional and physical signs of trauma and PTSD is the first step toward healing.

Trauma results from experiencing or witnessing events that overwhelm our capacity to cope. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) are clinical conditions that can develop following traumatic experiences. According to PTSD UK, approximately 4% of the UK population (2.6 million people) lives with PTSD at any given time, with lifetime incidence reaching 6.6 million.

Common symptoms of trauma and PTSD include:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks or nightmares
  • Avoiding reminders of the traumatic event
  • Negative changes in thinking and mood, including feeling detached or hopeless
  • Heightened reactivity, including irritability, angry outbursts, or being easily startled
  • Sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating
  • Hypervigilance and nervous system dysregulation

Complex trauma, often resulting from prolonged or repeated traumatic experiences like childhood abuse, can additionally manifest as difficulties with emotional regulation, relationship challenges, and problems with self-perception and identity.

Trauma affects the brain's stress-response systems, particularly the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which explains many of the physiological symptoms experienced. Recognising these signs is the first step toward seeking appropriate trauma counselling support.

Effective Approaches to Trauma Therapy in the UK

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends several evidence-based approaches for trauma and PTSD treatment. These therapies help process traumatic memories, develop coping strategies, and restore a sense of safety and control.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)
This structured approach helps identify and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours related to traumatic experiences. TF-CBT has strong research support, with studies showing 60-80% remission rates in civilian populations.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements) while processing traumatic memories to reduce their emotional impact. NICE guidelines recommend EMDR as a first-line treatment for PTSD, with effectiveness comparable to TF-CBT.

Somatic and Body-Based Approaches
These therapies address how trauma is stored in the body, helping release physical tension and regulate the nervous system. Approaches like Somatic Experiencing are particularly helpful for trauma manifesting as physical symptoms or dissociation.

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
For trauma accompanied by high levels of shame or self-criticism, CFT helps develop self-compassion and emotional regulation skills, creating a foundation for processing difficult experiences.

The effectiveness of trauma therapy isn't determined by re-telling the traumatic story, but by how the brain processes and integrates the experience. EMDR and TF-CBT facilitate this neural integration, helping the brain file traumatic memories as past events rather than current threats.

Trauma therapy takes many forms; from EMDR and TF-CBT to somatic and compassion-focused approaches.

Online Trauma Therapy: Accessibility and Effectiveness

The landscape of trauma counselling has evolved significantly, with online delivery now recognised as a viable and effective option. For many trauma survivors, online trauma therapy offers distinct advantages:

Enhanced Safety and Control
Accessing therapy from your own space can feel safer, especially when working through vulnerable experiences. This sense of control often helps clients engage more fully in the therapeutic process.

Comparable Clinical Outcomes
Research published by the National Institute for Health Research confirms that online cognitive behavioural therapy for PTSD is as effective as face-to-face therapy, with equivalent symptom reduction and maintained improvements at follow-up.

Increased Accessibility
Online trauma therapy removes geographical barriers, reduces travel time and costs, and accommodates various physical limitations or childcare responsibilities. This accessibility is particularly valuable for those in rural areas with limited local resources.

Specialisation Without Limitation
Rather than being restricted to local providers, online therapy allows access to specialists with expertise in specific trauma types, such as childhood trauma therapy, sexual trauma therapy, or complex PTSD treatment.

When selecting an online trauma therapist, verify their professional accreditation with bodies like the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), ensure they have specific trauma training, and confirm they use evidence-based approaches recommended by NICE guidelines.

The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of online therapy, with studies showing 13% of UK therapy sessions now occurring online compared to just 1% in 2020. This shift has democratised access to specialist trauma counselling support nationwide.

Online trauma therapy creates safe, flexible spaces for healing—bringing compassionate support within reach for more people than ever before.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Counselling

What's the difference between trauma counselling and regular therapy?

Trauma counselling specifically addresses the psychological impact of traumatic experiences using evidence-based approaches designed to process trauma memories and reduce PTSD symptoms. General therapy may help with broader issues but might not directly address trauma's neurobiological effects. Trauma specialists have specific training in approaches like EMDR or TF-CBT that target trauma responses.

How do I know if I need trauma therapy?

If you're experiencing intrusive memories, nightmares, avoiding reminders of painful events, feeling constantly on edge, having mood changes, or difficulty functioning in daily life following a distressing experience, trauma therapy may be beneficial. Even if the traumatic event happened years ago, these symptoms suggest unprocessed trauma that can respond well to targeted counselling.

How long does trauma therapy usually take?

The duration varies depending on the type and severity of trauma, your individual circumstances, and the therapeutic approach. Some structured trauma therapies like TF-CBT or EMDR typically range from 8-25 sessions. Complex or childhood trauma therapy may require longer-term support. Your therapist will discuss timelines based on your specific needs and regularly review progress.

Will trauma therapy make me feel worse before I feel better?

Some temporary discomfort can occur as you process difficult experiences, but a skilled trauma therapist ensures you develop coping strategies before addressing traumatic memories. Therapy should proceed at your pace, with an emphasis on safety and stabilisation. Research shows that while some sessions may feel emotionally challenging, the overall trajectory should be toward improved functioning.

Can childhood trauma be treated effectively in adults?

Yes, childhood trauma therapy can be very effective for adults. Approaches like Schema Therapy, EMDR, and parts-based therapies are specifically designed to address early developmental trauma. It's never too late to process these experiences and develop healthier coping strategies and beliefs about yourself and relationships.

Is online trauma therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Research shows that online trauma therapy can be equally effective as face-to-face therapy for most people. Studies published in the NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) confirm that online cognitive behavioural therapy for PTSD achieves comparable outcomes to in-person delivery, with sustained benefits at 12-month follow-up.

What types of trauma can be treated with therapy?

Trauma therapy can help with many different experiences, including single-incident traumas (accidents, assaults, natural disasters), complex trauma (childhood abuse, domestic violence, repeated trauma), medical trauma, birth trauma, military trauma, grief and loss, and racial or cultural trauma. Different approaches may be recommended based on the specific type of trauma, including specialised sexual trauma therapy.

How do I choose the right trauma therapist?

Look for a therapist with specific qualifications in trauma treatment, such as training in EMDR, TF-CBT, or other trauma-specific modalities. Check their accreditation with professional bodies like BACP or UKCP. Consider their experience with your specific type of trauma, and trust your comfort level during an initial consultation. Our placement team can help match you with appropriate trauma counselling specialists.

Will I need medication alongside trauma therapy?

While some people benefit from medication to manage specific symptoms like severe anxiety or depression, medication is not necessarily required for effective PTSD treatment. Psychotherapy remains the gold standard treatment for PTSD according to NICE guidelines. If medication might be helpful, your therapist can collaborate with your GP or a psychiatrist.

What happens in the first session of trauma therapy?

The first session typically focuses on building rapport, discussing confidentiality, gathering basic information about your current symptoms and history, and outlining the therapeutic approach. You won't be asked to deeply explore traumatic experiences in an initial session. Your therapist will focus on creating safety and explaining how the trauma counselling works before any trauma processing begins.

How is Complex PTSD different from PTSD, and does it require different treatment?

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) typically develops from prolonged traumatic experiences, especially in childhood, rather than single incidents. Beyond standard PTSD symptoms, C-PTSD often involves difficulties with emotional regulation, negative self-perception, and relationship problems. Treatment usually involves a phase-based approach, with greater emphasis on stabilisation and skills development before trauma processing, and may take longer than standard PTSD therapy.
