When Finding Affirming Support Feels Challenging

Having a qualified LGBTQ therapist who recognizes your unique challenges makes a profound difference in your healing journey.

Living authentically as an LGBT+ person in today's world can bring unique stressors and challenges. From navigating coming out processes to dealing with discrimination, family tensions, or gender dysphoria, these experiences significantly impact your mental wellbeing and sense of self.

Many LGBTQ+ individuals report feeling misunderstood or invalidated when seeking support, with research showing 40% of transgender people have had negative healthcare experiences and 14% avoid care altogether due to anticipated discrimination. Finding an LGBT therapist who truly understands your experiences shouldn't add to your stress.

LGBTQ+ Therapy That Honours Your Authentic Self

LGBT therapy provides a safe, affirming environment where your identity is respected, celebrated, and understood. Our LGBTQ therapists are trained in affirmative practices, focusing on validating your experiences rather than pathologizing your identity. They create spaces where you can explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment, addressing both everyday challenges and LGBTQ+-specific concerns.

Online LGBT counselling removes many traditional barriers to accessing care. You can connect with LGBTQ therapy specialists regardless of your location in the UK, from the privacy of your own home, eliminating concerns about traveling to unfamiliar areas or facing potential discrimination in waiting rooms.

Modern LGBT therapy has evolved significantly from historical approaches, embracing affirmative practices that validate identity, address minority stress, and incorporate advocacy. This shift ensures therapy becomes a space of empowerment rather than pathologization.

Common Questions About LGBT Therapy

Our LGBTQ+ therapists are committed to creating judgment-free spaces where your experiences and identity are never questioned or invalidated.
"How do I know if a therapist is truly LGBTQ+ friendly?"

Our therapists are specifically vetted for their understanding of LGBTQ+ issues. They demonstrate this through specialized training, inclusive language, and commitment to affirmative practices. We personally interview each therapist to ensure they provide truly affirming care.

"Will therapy try to change my sexual orientation or gender identity?"

Absolutely not. Ethical LGBTQ+ therapy is affirmative, not conversion therapy. Our therapists respect and validate your identity, focusing on helping you thrive as your authentic self. All our professionals adhere to strict ethical guidelines that prohibit conversion practices.

"Is online counselling as effective as in-person sessions?"

Research shows online therapy can be just as effective as in-person care. For many LGBTQ+ individuals, online sessions actually feel safer and more accessible, leading to more open and productive therapy experiences. Our secure platform ensures your privacy throughout.

"What if I'm still exploring my identity? Do I need to have everything figured out?"

Not at all. Many clients come to therapy during periods of questioning or exploration. Our therapists create a safe environment for identity exploration without pressure or expectations. The journey of self-discovery is welcomed and supported at any stage.

My Style & How I Work

My journey into therapy started as a Criminal Lawyer in Italy, where I worked daily with people facing intense psychological stress, sparking my passion to support mental health. My core belief is that people can transform even the toughest situations—like being in prison or overcoming impossible obstacles—when they embrace the right mental attitude. The most rewarding part of my work is helping clients become their true selves. Every client takes me on a journey of learning about life, love, and compassion. I have a very practical approach, my expertise is full of helpful tools but at the same time I also work with dreams and the unconscious communication of the psyche.

My Story & What Drives Me

My style is supportive and helpful. In the right situation, I share a witty sense of humour with my clients. I find this to be a bonding experience that put things in perspective. I believe I am a robust therapist, I have listened to many traumatic stories with compassion and the ability to still think and process the experience with the client. I believe in boundaries and compassionate listening. I am a problem solver and I can interpret dreams that very often offer a surprising solutions or insight.

Types of Therapy I Offer

I offer therapy to individuals and young adults from 15 years of age to the older population. I am trained in CBT. This approach allows me to offer the client practical tools and focus on the here and now. I am trained in EMDR – this is a specific approach approved by NICE guidelines for trauma and complex trauma. I am trained in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. This is a deeper approach exploring how the past is linked to the present and how sometimes we make unconscious choices. My aim is to bring the into focus unhelpful hidden dynamics.

My Expertise & Focus Areas

My strongest area of expertise is work related to borderline personality disorder, emotional dysregulation and other personality disorders thanks to the MBT programme’s extensive training at The Maudsley. Working with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, stress and insomnia has been the core of my practice in the NHS during the many years I worked for IAPT and various GP surgeries. I developed a particular interest in health anxiety and chronic pain when I was working as part of the Health Department at St. Thomas. My passion is psychodynamic psychotherapy, working with dreams, and the deeper meaning of our psyche. Recently, I completed work as a psychologist for a large consultancy company. My work informed their EAP programme, as it explored and outlined key work-related issues and employee coaching opportunities. Thanks to my extensive training and clinical expertise I can confidently work with abuse, anger, divorce, low self esteem and stress.

My Therapeutic Approach & Methods

The core of being a Counselling Psychologist is to be trained in different therapeutic modalities. No approach should be superior to another, instead, the idea is to use the appropriate approach with the right presentation. Thanks to my extensive training and clinical expertise I believe I can offer a variety of methodologies. I use CBT to help clients solving practical everyday challenges. I focus on EMDR for trauma. I use MBT for personality disorders, emotional dysregulation, stress, anxiety, anger, emotional abusive relationships. I use psychodynamic psychotherapy for deeper issue, adverse childhood events and low self esteem problems.
I warmly invite you to take the next step on your journey toward healing—reach out today to schedule a session, and let’s explore how I can support you in becoming your truest self.

Hi, I’m Ylenia, a Relationship Therapist dedicated to supporting individuals and couples in navigating life’s challenges, improving communication and building stronger, healthier relationships.

I help individuals and couples reconnect, reflect and heal – both with themselves and within their relationships.

Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply seeking more clarity and connection, therapy with me offers a compassionate space to explore what is really going on beneath the surface. My approach is rooted in empathy, curiosity and collaboration.

Together, we will untangle the patterns that may be keeping you from feeling understood, valued and emotionally safe. You don’t need to have all the answers – just a willingness to begin.

Wherever you are on your journey, I’ll be alongside you as we explore things together.

My Style & How I Work

Empathy, trust and confidentiality are at the heart of my work. Therapy with me is a judgment-free space, where you can explore your thoughts, emotions and relationship patterns with the guidance of a professional.

Together, we’ll explore what’s holding you back and find new ways to understand and care for yourself. In the therapy room, I create a balanced and non-judgmental space where you will feel heard.

Fluent in both English and Italian, I strive to make therapy inclusive, accessible and culturally sensitive. I also stay up to date with the latest therapeutic practices through CPD trainings and BACP conferences, ensuring I provide the most effective support possible.

My Story & What Drives Me

My journey into therapy began with a deep interest in human relationships – why we connect, how we disconnect and what helps us repair.

Originally from Lazio, Italy, I moved to the UK over 10 years ago to fully pursue this calling. I began my path with a degree in Psychosocial Studies & Psychodynamic Counselling and volunteered for years with Samaritans, where I offered emotional support to individuals in distress. This experience shaped my understanding of how powerful being truly heard can be.

What drives me most is, witnessing those moments of reconnection: when a client begins to see themselves with more compassion, or when a couple finds their way back to emotional closeness. Those shifts are powerful and deeply human.

Types of Therapy I Offer

I offer individual and couples therapy for adults.

Whether you’re seeking support as an individual or a couple, I offer a warm and non-judgmental space where we can explore what you are going through and work towards meaningful, lasting change – at your pace.

My Expertise & Focus Areas

I support people dealing with many different issues including:

  • Anxiety
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Depression
  • Life changes

I help couples:

  • Improve communication
  • Rebuild connection
  • Navigate challenges such as conflict, intimacy issues, parenthood, infidelity

My Therapeutic Approach & Methods

My work is guided by an integrative approach, which means I combine different therapeutic models to best support each individual or couple I work with. I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” method – each person is unique, so I adapt my approach based on your needs, goals and the issues you’re facing.

At the heart of my work is the belief that self-awareness and emotional connection are key to creating lasting change. I draw from:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: to explore how past experiences might be influencing your present
  • Systemic Therapy: to understand how relationships and patterns affect your current situation
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): to help individuals and couples better understand their emotional needs and rebuild safe, secure connections

I believe everyone deserves a space where they feel truly heard and supported. I offer a warm and empathetic environment where clients can openly explore their emotions and experiences, allowing us to work together toward meaningful goals.

My background is in Social Psychology, and I went on to complete further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I have over eight years of experience working with clients in both NHS and private practice settings. My therapeutic approach is relaxed and informal. Together we can help make changes that will hopefully have a long lasting impact long after therapy is completed.

My Approach

I use a blend of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and person-centred therapy. CBT is a practical, solution-focused approach that helps you understand how your thoughts affect your feelings and behaviours. In our sessions, we might use tools like thought records or journaling to help identify patterns and move towards more helpful ways of thinking and coping.

Alongside CBT, my person-centred approach ensures sessions are guided by you. I offer a non-judgemental, compassionate space where you feel safe to talk openly and be yourself. Building a trusting relationship is key to our work together.

What I Can Help With

I support clients with a range of issues, including:

Anxiety and low mood

Low self-esteem and confidence

And more

Understanding LGBT Affirmative Therapy Approaches

Affirmative LGBTQ therapists create environments where LGBT+ identities are celebrated rather than merely tolerated. Research confirms that when therapists display visible signs of LGBTQ+ allyship and use inclusive intake forms, clients report feeling significantly safer in therapeutic settings.

LGBT affirmative therapy represents a fundamental shift away from outdated approaches that once pathologized diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Modern LGBT therapists employ specific techniques designed to create genuinely safe environments for clients, including intentional inclusive language, environmental cues that signal safety, and interventions that address the impacts of societal stigma.

At its core, LGBT therapy acknowledges the unique stressors that come with minority status in society. Research shows that chronic "minority stress" contributes significantly to mental health disparities, with 68% of transgender people and 66% of LGB individuals reporting discrimination-based distress. Effective LGBTQ counselling addresses these external pressures rather than locating problems within the individual's identity.

  • Validation of identity and experiences
  • Exploration of internalized stigma and its impacts
  • Development of coping strategies for discrimination and microaggressions
  • Support for coming out processes and relationship dynamics
  • Connection to community resources and support networks

Mental Health Challenges in the LGBTQ+ Community: Why Specialised Support Matters

Recent data reveals concerning mental health disparities affecting the UK's LGBTQ+ population. The 2024 UK National Survey of LGBTQ+ Youth found that 58% of respondents seriously considered suicide in the past year, while 19% made an attempt—rates significantly higher than those in the general population.

These statistics reflect the real-world impact of ongoing societal challenges:

  • Family rejection: Cited by 69% of homeless LGBTQ+ youth as a primary factor in their housing insecurity
  • Discrimination experiences: 70% of non-binary individuals meet clinical criteria for anxiety
  • Healthcare barriers: 40% of transgender people report negative healthcare experiences
  • Conversion therapy exposure: Associated with 2.8× higher suicide attempt risk

LGBT psychologists and counsellors with specialized training understand these complex factors and their impacts on mental health. They provide targeted interventions that address minority stress, internalized stigma, and the specific challenges faced by different members of the community. For instance, transgender clients may benefit from support around gender dysphoria, while many LGB clients value therapy space to process coming out experiences or family dynamics.

Specialised therapy addresses LGBTQ+ challenges through validation and targeted coping strategies.

The Benefits of Online LGBT Counselling for UK Clients

Online therapy has transformed access to LGBT-affirming mental healthcare in the UK. For LGBTQ+ individuals, online counselling offers several distinct advantages:

Expanded Access to Specialised Care

Geography no longer limits your options for finding an therapist. This is particularly valuable for those in rural areas like Cornwall, the Highlands, or Northern Ireland, where local options may be limited or non-existent. With online sessions, you can connect with a qualified therapist, psychologist, or other specialized provider regardless of their physical location in the UK.

Enhanced Privacy and Safety

Online therapy eliminates concerns about being seen entering a therapist's office or encountering others in waiting rooms. This additional layer of privacy can be particularly meaningful for those who aren't out in all contexts or who live in less accepting communities.

Comfort and Control of Environment

Attending counselling sessions from your own space allows you to create the exact environment that helps you feel most comfortable discussing sensitive topics. This sense of control can facilitate deeper therapeutic work and more authentic self-expression.

Reduced Financial Barriers

Private therapy costs vary significantly across the UK, from around £95 per session in London to £85 in Northern Ireland. Online LGBTQ+ therapy often provides more affordable alternatives while eliminating travel expenses, making quality care more accessible.

Digital mental health innovations are expanding accessibility to LGBT therapy, with specialized platforms now offering tailored interventions for gender dysphoria, coming out processes, and minority stress. These developments are helping bridge critical gaps in traditional care access for the LGBTQ+ community across the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions About LGBT Therapy

What exactly is LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy?

LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy is an approach that validates and supports diverse sexual orientations and gender identities as normal variations of human experience. Unlike historical approaches that pathologized LGBTQ+ identities, affirmative therapy focuses on addressing the impacts of minority stress, discrimination, and internalized stigma rather than viewing the identity itself as problematic [https://www.counseling.org/resources/topics/cultural-identities/lgbtq].

What qualifications should I look for in an LGBTQ+ therapist?

Look for therapists with specific training in LGBTQ+ issues beyond their core qualifications. This may include certifications in LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy, membership in organizations like Pink Therapy, or specialized continuing education. During initial consultations, ask about their experience working with LGBTQ+ clients and their approach to affirmative care.

Do I need to see an LGBTQ+ therapist if I'm part of the community?

Not necessarily. While many clients value the shared understanding that comes from working with a therapist from the LGBTQ+ community, what's most important is working with someone who practices affirmative therapy and has training in LGBT issues. Many excellent allies provide effective, supportive LGBT therapy to LGBTQ+ clients.

How do online LGBTQ+ therapy sessions work?

Sessions take place via secure video conferencing platforms similar to Zoom but with enhanced privacy protections. You'll need a private space, reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. Most sessions last 50 minutes and follow a similar format to in-person therapy, with the advantage of accessing LGBTQ counselling from your chosen environment.

What issues can LGBTQ+ therapy help with?

LGBT therapy can address both general mental health concerns (like anxiety, depression, relationship issues) and challenges specific to LGBTQ+ experiences, including:
- Coming out processes and identity exploration
- Gender dysphoria and transition-related support
- Relationship and family dynamics
- Coping with discrimination and microaggressions
- Internalized stigma and self-acceptance
- Intersectional identity concerns

Is therapy confidential? I'm not out to everyone in my life.

Absolutely. LGBTQ+ therapists are bound by strict confidentiality regulations. Information shared in therapy remains private except in specific circumstances involving risk of harm. Many LGBTQ+ clients aren't out in all contexts, and therapists respect this completely. Online LGBT therapy offers additional privacy since you control your environment during sessions.

How much does LGBTQ+ therapy cost in the UK?

Therapy costs vary depending on location and therapist experience. Private therapy typically ranges from £55-£110 per session. We're transparent about costs, and our team can help you understand payment options before committing to sessions.

What if I'm questioning my sexuality or gender identity?

LGBT therapy provides a safe space for identity exploration without pressure or expectations. An affirmative therapist won't attempt to influence your identity development but will support your personal journey of self-discovery. Many clients find LGBTQ counselling valuable during questioning periods, regardless of where that exploration leads.

Can therapy help with the trauma of past discrimination or rejection?

Yes. LGBTQ+ individuals often experience minority stress and traumatic events related to their identity. Affirmative LGBTQ therapists are trained in trauma-informed approaches and can help process these experiences, develop resilience, and heal from past wounds. Research shows that appropriate therapeutic support can significantly reduce the mental health impacts of discrimination.

Do you offer therapy for partners or family members of LGBTQ+ individuals?

Yes. We work with partners navigating relationship dynamics, parents learning to support LGBTQ+ children, and family members adjusting to a loved one's coming out or transition. These supportive therapy sessions help build understanding and strengthen relationships while honoring the LGBTQ+ person's identity and experience.

How do I get started with therapy at UK Therapy Guide?

Getting started is simple. You can complete our online form, and our team will personally match you with suitable LGBTQ+ therapists based on your specific needs and preferences. Alternatively, contact our placement team directly for assistance finding the right LGBTQ therapist. Many clients can begin sessions within a week of reaching out.
