Therapy for Porn Addiction

If you are seeking help with a porn addiction then very often seeing a therapist or counsellor is the first step towards recovery. Just like any other form of addiction, your psychoanalyst will be able to help you by making use of a mix of treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), couples therapy and a mix of other techniques, such as focussing on the 12-step programme.

The use of therapy

Unlike sexual addictions where the behaviour just has to be reduced, porn addiction usually requires that the use of porn is completely eradicated. To begin with, your therapist will probably look at things such as dividing you from your addiction and then looking into the methods that you use to try and make your use of porn acceptable. CBT can help in many ways. It will not look at what has happened in the past but will focus entirely on the here and now and looking at ways of preventing the addictive behaviour of using too much porn before tackling the underlying longer term issues i.e. The reasons why.

Dealing with the triggers

CBT will be used to look at what triggers the activity and why you are viewing the use of porn as a way of escape. Therapists have ways of negating this pattern so that when triggers occur, you will do something else instead. This could be calling a friend, speaking with your analyst, taking up a sporting activity or simply pouring all of your energy into something entirely different.
