When Your Relationship with Food Becomes Overwhelming

Many people find the connection between food and emotions to be all-consuming, impacting both mental and physical health.

The connection between food and emotions can become all-consuming. Whether you're experiencing restrictive eating patterns, binge episodes, purging behaviours, or obsessive thoughts about body image, these challenges can isolate you from loved ones and affect every aspect of daily life. Recent studies show eating disorders have risen dramatically in the UK, with prevalence among 17-19 year olds increasing from 0.8% in 2017 to 12.5% in 2023.

Living with an eating disorder often means carrying a heavy burden in silence. The constant mental calculations around food, weight, and exercise can leave little mental space for other aspects of life, while physical health complications create additional worry and distress.

Eating disorders don't discriminate—they affect people of all genders, ages, and backgrounds. While young women are disproportionately affected (20.8% vs. 5.1% for young men), about 25% of those with eating disorders in the UK are male, highlighting the importance of accessible professional support for everyone.

Specialised Support From Experienced Eating Disorder Therapists

Working with a qualified eating disorder therapist provides a foundation for healing through evidence-based approaches tailored to your specific needs. Our eating disorder therapists use proven methods like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-E), which research shows is effective in addressing the distorted thoughts and behaviours that maintain eating disorders.

Online therapy breaks down barriers to getting help, offering flexible scheduling and removing the anxiety that can come with in-person appointments. Online eating disorder therapy removes common barriers to treatment, including geographical limitations and long NHS waiting times. With private online sessions, you can begin your recovery journey within days rather than waiting the 6-12 months typical for NHS specialist services.

Qualified therapists provide strategies to improve mental well-being by using evidence-based methods in online sessions.

Common Concerns About Working With an Eating Disorder Therapist

Early intervention leads to better outcomes, and therapy can meet you wherever you are in your recovery journey.
"Is my eating issue serious enough for therapy?"

If your thoughts about food, weight or body image are causing distress or affecting your daily functioning, that's reason enough to seek support from an eating disorder therapist. Early intervention leads to better outcomes, and you don't need to wait until things become severe.

"Can eating disorders really be treated effectively online?"

Yes. Research shows that online therapy for eating disorders is comparable to in-person treatment in effectiveness. Studies show that patients receiving virtual treatment report satisfaction rates that match in-person therapy at approximately 73%.

"What if I'm not ready to fully recover yet?"

Many people feel ambivalent about recovery—this is actually a normal part of the process. Our eating disorder therapists understand this ambivalence and will work with you wherever you are in your journey, without judgment or pressure.

"How long does eating disorder therapy take?"

Recovery timelines vary depending on the individual and the type of eating disorder. Treatment typically requires around 20 sessions for bulimia or binge eating disorder, and up to 40 sessions for anorexia. Your eating disorder therapist will develop a personalised plan based on your specific needs.

Ambivalence about recovery is a natural part of the healing process. Our therapists understand the complex emotions involved in eating disorders and provide support that meets you exactly where you are, without judgement or pressure.

My Style & How I Work

My journey into therapy started as a Criminal Lawyer in Italy, where I worked daily with people facing intense psychological stress, sparking my passion to support mental health. My core belief is that people can transform even the toughest situations—like being in prison or overcoming impossible obstacles—when they embrace the right mental attitude. The most rewarding part of my work is helping clients become their true selves. Every client takes me on a journey of learning about life, love, and compassion. I have a very practical approach, my expertise is full of helpful tools but at the same time I also work with dreams and the unconscious communication of the psyche.

My Story & What Drives Me

My style is supportive and helpful. In the right situation, I share a witty sense of humour with my clients. I find this to be a bonding experience that put things in perspective. I believe I am a robust therapist, I have listened to many traumatic stories with compassion and the ability to still think and process the experience with the client. I believe in boundaries and compassionate listening. I am a problem solver and I can interpret dreams that very often offer a surprising solutions or insight.

Types of Therapy I Offer

I offer therapy to individuals and young adults from 15 years of age to the older population. I am trained in CBT. This approach allows me to offer the client practical tools and focus on the here and now. I am trained in EMDR – this is a specific approach approved by NICE guidelines for trauma and complex trauma. I am trained in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. This is a deeper approach exploring how the past is linked to the present and how sometimes we make unconscious choices. My aim is to bring the into focus unhelpful hidden dynamics.

My Expertise & Focus Areas

My strongest area of expertise is work related to borderline personality disorder, emotional dysregulation and other personality disorders thanks to the MBT programme’s extensive training at The Maudsley. Working with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, stress and insomnia has been the core of my practice in the NHS during the many years I worked for IAPT and various GP surgeries. I developed a particular interest in health anxiety and chronic pain when I was working as part of the Health Department at St. Thomas. My passion is psychodynamic psychotherapy, working with dreams, and the deeper meaning of our psyche. Recently, I completed work as a psychologist for a large consultancy company. My work informed their EAP programme, as it explored and outlined key work-related issues and employee coaching opportunities. Thanks to my extensive training and clinical expertise I can confidently work with abuse, anger, divorce, low self esteem and stress.

My Therapeutic Approach & Methods

The core of being a Counselling Psychologist is to be trained in different therapeutic modalities. No approach should be superior to another, instead, the idea is to use the appropriate approach with the right presentation. Thanks to my extensive training and clinical expertise I believe I can offer a variety of methodologies. I use CBT to help clients solving practical everyday challenges. I focus on EMDR for trauma. I use MBT for personality disorders, emotional dysregulation, stress, anxiety, anger, emotional abusive relationships. I use psychodynamic psychotherapy for deeper issue, adverse childhood events and low self esteem problems.
I warmly invite you to take the next step on your journey toward healing—reach out today to schedule a session, and let’s explore how I can support you in becoming your truest self.

Hi, I’m Ylenia, a Relationship Therapist dedicated to supporting individuals and couples in navigating life’s challenges, improving communication and building stronger, healthier relationships.

I help individuals and couples reconnect, reflect and heal – both with themselves and within their relationships.

Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply seeking more clarity and connection, therapy with me offers a compassionate space to explore what is really going on beneath the surface. My approach is rooted in empathy, curiosity and collaboration.

Together, we will untangle the patterns that may be keeping you from feeling understood, valued and emotionally safe. You don’t need to have all the answers – just a willingness to begin.

Wherever you are on your journey, I’ll be alongside you as we explore things together.

My Style & How I Work

Empathy, trust and confidentiality are at the heart of my work. Therapy with me is a judgment-free space, where you can explore your thoughts, emotions and relationship patterns with the guidance of a professional.

Together, we’ll explore what’s holding you back and find new ways to understand and care for yourself. In the therapy room, I create a balanced and non-judgmental space where you will feel heard.

Fluent in both English and Italian, I strive to make therapy inclusive, accessible and culturally sensitive. I also stay up to date with the latest therapeutic practices through CPD trainings and BACP conferences, ensuring I provide the most effective support possible.

My Story & What Drives Me

My journey into therapy began with a deep interest in human relationships – why we connect, how we disconnect and what helps us repair.

Originally from Lazio, Italy, I moved to the UK over 10 years ago to fully pursue this calling. I began my path with a degree in Psychosocial Studies & Psychodynamic Counselling and volunteered for years with Samaritans, where I offered emotional support to individuals in distress. This experience shaped my understanding of how powerful being truly heard can be.

What drives me most is, witnessing those moments of reconnection: when a client begins to see themselves with more compassion, or when a couple finds their way back to emotional closeness. Those shifts are powerful and deeply human.

Types of Therapy I Offer

I offer individual and couples therapy for adults.

Whether you’re seeking support as an individual or a couple, I offer a warm and non-judgmental space where we can explore what you are going through and work towards meaningful, lasting change – at your pace.

My Expertise & Focus Areas

I support people dealing with many different issues including:

  • Anxiety
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Depression
  • Life changes

I help couples:

  • Improve communication
  • Rebuild connection
  • Navigate challenges such as conflict, intimacy issues, parenthood, infidelity

My Therapeutic Approach & Methods

My work is guided by an integrative approach, which means I combine different therapeutic models to best support each individual or couple I work with. I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” method – each person is unique, so I adapt my approach based on your needs, goals and the issues you’re facing.

At the heart of my work is the belief that self-awareness and emotional connection are key to creating lasting change. I draw from:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: to explore how past experiences might be influencing your present
  • Systemic Therapy: to understand how relationships and patterns affect your current situation
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): to help individuals and couples better understand their emotional needs and rebuild safe, secure connections

I believe everyone deserves a space where they feel truly heard and supported. I offer a warm and empathetic environment where clients can openly explore their emotions and experiences, allowing us to work together toward meaningful goals.

My background is in Social Psychology, and I went on to complete further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I have over eight years of experience working with clients in both NHS and private practice settings. My therapeutic approach is relaxed and informal. Together we can help make changes that will hopefully have a long lasting impact long after therapy is completed.

My Approach

I use a blend of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and person-centred therapy. CBT is a practical, solution-focused approach that helps you understand how your thoughts affect your feelings and behaviours. In our sessions, we might use tools like thought records or journaling to help identify patterns and move towards more helpful ways of thinking and coping.

Alongside CBT, my person-centred approach ensures sessions are guided by you. I offer a non-judgemental, compassionate space where you feel safe to talk openly and be yourself. Building a trusting relationship is key to our work together.

What I Can Help With

I support clients with a range of issues, including:

Anxiety and low mood

Understanding Different Types of Eating Disorder Therapy Approaches

Effective eating disorder treatment explores emotional patterns while building a supportive recovery environment.

Eating disorder counselling encompasses several evidence-based approaches tailored to specific diagnoses and individual needs. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-E) is considered the gold standard treatment, particularly for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, focusing on identifying and challenging distorted thoughts about food, weight, and body image while developing healthier behaviours.

For adolescents, Family-Based Therapy (FBT) has shown remarkable effectiveness, especially for anorexia nervosa. This approach actively involves parents and caregivers in the recovery process, empowering them to support healthy eating patterns. Meanwhile, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) addresses the emotional regulation challenges often underlying disordered eating and emotional eating, particularly beneficial for those who struggle with impulsivity and self-destructive behaviours.

  • CBT-E: Targets distorted thoughts and behaviours around food and body image
  • Family-Based Therapy: Engages family support systems, especially effective for younger patients
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: Builds emotional regulation skills to manage distress without using food
  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy: Addresses relationship issues that may trigger or maintain eating disorders

Effective eating disorder treatment goes beyond addressing food behaviours—it explores underlying emotional patterns, builds coping mechanisms, and creates supportive environments for recovery. Your eating disorder therapist will select approaches based on your specific diagnosis and personal circumstances.

The Benefits of Working with a Specialised Eating Disorder Therapist

A qualified eating disorder therapist brings essential expertise that general mental health practitioners may lack. With eating disorders showing alarming increases in the UK—hospital admissions nearly doubling since 2011/12 to 4,462 in 2022/23. Specialised knowledge is crucial for effective treatment.

Specialised eating disorder therapists understand the complex interplay between psychological, biological, and social factors that contribute to and maintain these conditions. They're trained to conduct thorough assessments using validated diagnostic tools, create comprehensive treatment plans that address nutritional rehabilitation alongside psychological interventions, and monitor for medical complications that require coordination with healthcare providers.

When choosing an eating disorder therapist, look for specific credentials such as:

  • Advanced training in eating disorder treatment modalities like CBT-E
  • Experience working as an anorexia therapist, bulimia therapist, or binge eating disorder therapist
  • Understanding of nutritional aspects of recovery and body dysmorphia
  • Ability to coordinate with medical professionals and registered dietitians when necessary
  • Trauma-informed approach, as many eating disorders have roots in traumatic experiences

Eating disorders are complex conditions requiring specialised care. Studies show that treatment from therapists with specific eating disorder training leads to better outcomes and reduced relapse rates compared to general mental health support.

Specialised therapists provide expert care, understanding the complex factors contributing to eating disorders.

Online vs. In-Person Eating Disorder Treatment: Making the Right Choice

Online eating disorder therapy has emerged as a valuable alternative to traditional in-person treatment, particularly since the pandemic accelerated digital healthcare adoption. Research confirms that online treatment delivers comparable benefits while addressing key barriers that prevent many from accessing help.

The accessibility advantages of online therapy are particularly significant for eating disorders, where prompt intervention is crucial. While NHS waiting times for specialist eating disorder services range from 6-12 months, private online therapy with an eating disorder therapist can typically begin within 1-2 weeks. This timing difference can be critical, as earlier intervention is strongly associated with better recovery outcomes.

Cost considerations also factor into the decision between online and in-person options:

Treatment TypeAverage Cost RangeTypical DurationTotal Investment
Online Therapy    £40-£150 per session  20-40 sessions      £800-£6,000
In-Person Private £50-£250 per session  20-40 sessions      £1,000-£10,000
NHS Services      Free (with referral)  Variable wait times Free

While online therapy isn't suitable for everyone—particularly those needing intensive medical monitoring—it provides an effective, accessible option for many people struggling with eating disorders.

The privacy of online therapy appeals to many people with eating disorders who feel uncomfortable discussing their relationship with food face-to-face. This reduced stigma helps people seek help earlier, potentially preventing progression to more severe stages of illness.

Online therapy offers a flexible, accessible option, breaking down geographical and scheduling barriers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Eating Disorder Therapy

What types of eating disorders can be treated through online therapy?

Online therapy is effective for various eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa (with an anorexia therapist), bulimia nervosa (with a bulimia therapist), binge eating disorder, and other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED). However, if you have severe medical complications or are significantly underweight, you may initially need in-person medical support alongside online therapy.

How does online eating disorder therapy work?

Online eating disorder therapy takes place via secure video sessions where you and your eating disorder therapist meet regularly, just as you would in-person. Sessions typically last 50 minutes and follow structured treatment protocols like CBT-E, adapting evidence-based techniques to the online environment. Your therapist may also provide resources, worksheets, and monitoring tools to support your progress between sessions.

How long does eating disorder treatment usually take?

Treatment duration varies depending on the type and severity of your eating disorder. For bulimia or binge eating disorder, treatment typically requires about 20 sessions over 5-6 months. For anorexia nervosa, recovery often takes longer—around 40 sessions or more over 8-12 months. Your eating disorder therapist will discuss expectations during your initial assessment.

Will my therapist make me follow a meal plan or weigh myself?

Treatment approaches vary based on individual needs and the specific eating disorder. While nutritional rehabilitation is often an important component of recovery, particularly for restrictive eating disorders, your therapist will work collaboratively with you to determine appropriate monitoring techniques. This may include meal planning and weight monitoring in some cases, but always with sensitivity to your specific situation.

How much does eating disorder therapy cost with UK Therapy Guide?

Sessions with eating disorder therapists typically range from £60-£120 per session, depending on the therapist's qualifications and experience level. We offer transparency about fees before you begin, and some private health insurance plans may cover part of the cost.

Are eating disorder therapists on UK Therapy Guide qualified specialists?

Yes, our eating disorder therapists have specific training and experience in treating eating disorders beyond general therapy qualifications. Many hold additional certifications in evidence-based treatments like CBT-E or FBT. All therapists are verified members of professional bodies like BACP, UKCP, or HCPC.

Can I access therapy if I'm on an NHS waiting list?

Absolutely. Many clients choose to work with our eating disorder therapists while waiting for NHS specialist services. Private therapy can provide immediate support and skills development, potentially improving your condition before NHS treatment begins. Some clients also find that private therapy is sufficient and choose to cancel their NHS referral.

What if I don't feel ready to recover but want some support?

Many people with eating disorders feel ambivalent about recovery, and our eating disorder therapists understand this. Therapy can still be beneficial even if you're not fully committed to change yet. Your therapist will meet you where you are, helping you explore your ambivalence and supporting you without pushing for changes you're not ready to make.

Do I need a referral from my GP to access eating disorder therapy?

No, you don't need a GP referral to work with our eating disorder therapists. However, we do recommend keeping your GP informed about your treatment, particularly if you're experiencing physical symptoms, as coordination between your therapist and medical doctor can be beneficial for comprehensive care.

How do I know if my eating behaviours warrant therapy?

If your thoughts about food, eating, weight, or body image are causing distress or interfering with your daily life, eating disorder therapy may be beneficial—regardless of whether you meet diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder. Warning signs include obsessive calorie counting, anxiety around mealtimes, avoiding social eating, compensatory behaviours after eating, or feeling that food is controlling your life.
